Introduction
My name is Manuel Centeno Duque, I am an enthusiastic researcher with diverse experiences that cumulatively demonstrate my qualifications for the undergraduate research certificate. My research path began with simple curiosity about the scientific world and transformed to hands-on learning complementing classroom learning. While completing my undergraduate degree, I have engaged in interdisciplinary research studies spanning microbiology, analytical chemistry and physiology, which have all contributed to my development as a scientist.
One of my first research experiences involving the determination of uric acid in human saliva during a directed studies with Dr. Kingsley Donkor. This work developed my technical skills and taught me persistence in the face of unexpected results and their value. This same mindset has been carried into my Honour’s thesis, where I am investigating endothelial function following dietary sodium intake. Strengthening my understanding in physiology, this project also has reinforced my passion to address real-world health issues, policies, and questions.
Through my research and dissemination, I have developed a passion for science outreach and mentorship. By founding the Microbiology Outreach Foundation, I am connecting underserved communities with STEM education. In Summer 2024, the organization has already engaged over 300 children in hands-on microbiology sessions. Initiatives like these demonstrate my ability to foster curiosity and inspire others. Further highlighting this, I have worked to advance research outreach opportunities like the now inaugural “Strike the Match” event at Thompson Rivers University, adding to my legacy.
Having a diverse range of experiences throughout my undergraduate degree, I have not only developed technical and analytical questioning but cemented my commitment to bridging the gap between scientific questioning and dissemination. Overall, I am passionate in using research as a path to inspire curiosity, answer complex questions, and educate both the academic and general public.
